The 2019 Main Residency Match on March 5 was the largest ever, with 38,376 applicants submitting program choices for 35,185 positions, the American Medical Association reports.
The number of available first-year positions increased to 32,194, a 6.5 percent increase over 2018. The increase is due to the number of osteopathic programs joining the Main Residency Match as a result of the transition to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education programs.
The fill rate of all positions offered was 95 percent. Specialties with more than 30 positions that had a U.S. medical school senior-fill rate of more than 90 percent included:
- Otolaryngology — 93.9 percent
- Integrated plastic surgery — 91.9 percent
- Thoracic surgery — 91.9 percent
- Neurological surgery — 91.8 percent
- Orthopedic surgery — 91.8 percent
