MGMA advocates for congressional oversight of CMMI: 5 notes

Practice Management

The Medical Group Management Association recently released a statement advocating for congressional oversight of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, which was published on DOTmed. The statement was written by Halee Fischer-Wright, MD, the CEO and president of MGMA.

Here's what you need to know:

1. MGMA stands in support of U.S. Representatives Tom Price, MD (R-Ga.); Charles Boustany, MD (R-La.); and Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.), who have led the effort to increase congressional oversight of CMMI.

2. In a recent letter to CMS, which was signed by 179 members of Congress, the representatives claimed CMS had overreached its authority by mandating "experimental" programs in the push for value-based payment arrangements.

3. MGMA says CMMI should play a "statutory" role in facilitating the transition from fee-for-service to value-based payment programs.

4. The association encourages CMMI to institute a more transparent process that incorporates physician input prior to mandating new programs.

5. The association also advocates for additional alternative payment models under MACRA.
