Practice Management

Roanoke, Va.-based Carilion Clinic is charging ahead, implementing strategies to combat physician burnout, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Here are six things to know:

1. Carilion Clinic is committed to creating a healthy physician culture, eliminating adversarial issues in the hospital.

2. The clinic brought in Wayne Sotile, founder of Davidson, N.C.-based Center for Physician Resilience, to spearhead the efforts to quench physician burnout.

3. Carilion Clinic's Mark Greenawald, MD, Patrice Weiss, MD, and David Musick head the committee for addressing physician burnout. Mr. Sotile serves as the committee's adviser and consultant.

4. The committee surveyed Carilion Clinic's physicians, gathering data about burnout rates.

5. Equipped with physician burnout data, the committee is now developing initiatives for the whole system and individual departments to help physicians with their stress.

6. One such program involves a "trust team" of first responders who will speak with physicians and support them in receiving help.
