Apple releases first CareKit apps — 4 highlights

Practice Management

Apple released the very first apps made using CareKit, according to The Verge.

Here are four highlights:

1. CareKit is an open software platform that lets developers create iPhone apps that can help people manage various medical conditions and share information with their physicians.

2. The four apps released were:

  • One Drop, which tracks diabetes-related metrics and shares data with other diabetes patients anonymously
  • Glow Nurture, which focuses on pregnancy
  • Glow Baby, which focuses on a baby's first year
  • Start, which is geared toward aiding people with depression

3. The release of these apps signifies Apple's first real move into the realm of true healthcare, as opposed to scientific research or simple health tracking.

4. Guidelines for app submission include a clause that prohibits developers from sharing user information with third parties for marketing or data-mining purposes, and each app must provide a privacy policy. Apple will also reject any apps that provide users with a diagnosis or treatment advice without FDA approval.
