What role do consumers think technology should play in healthcare? 5 takeaways

Practice Management

Although many consumers understand technology's benefits, others have voiced concerns about how large a role it should play in healthcare, according to Deloitte.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Home health technology can help patients better manage their conditions and slow disease progress.

2. Technology can also give patients tools to incite and maintain healthy behaviors.

3. Some consumers are concerned the reliance on technology will take away from the physician-patient relationship.

4. Consumers often think technology will invade their privacy, causing some healthcare professionals to call for further education so patients better understand the monitoring benefits.

5. Various technological developers may have to address various challenges before consumers wholly accept home health technology. Some of the challenges include:

•    Interoperability
•    Creating a unified patient record. This may entail the collaboration of various stakeholders across different sectors.
•    Technology has different segments of users. Often, different users have different needs and companies will have to take this into account when creating tools.
•    Care teams' roles are often changing. Technological solutions may have to incorporate care teams as consumers often value their relationship with physicians.
•    Provider engagement. Companies may want to seek stakeholders to incite customers' trust and to help technological companies better understand patients' needs and preferences.
