A recent survey of healthcare executives in hospitals around the nation found few organizations are adopting precision medicine, with the exception of academic medical centers.
Here are five things to know:
1. Of the respondents, 59 percent reported precision medicine will not play a major role in their organizations in the next five years.
2. Sixty-eight percent of respondents from non-academic hospitals and health systems said precision medicine will play an average, small or non-existent role in their organizations in the next five years.
3. The survey found few organizations are integrating genomics capabilities into the electronic health record systems with 63 percent of respondents saying their organization had no plans to build genomic data into their EHRs.
4. The survey found opposing results from academic medical centers with 71 percent of respondents saying precision medicine will play a significant role in their organizations between now and 2020.
5. Sixty-four percent of academic medical center respondents said they plan to build genomic data into their EHRs.
