Rural healthcare remains strong in Iowa — 5 points

A recent Iowa Department of Health survey found Iowa is among the top 10 states with adults in excellent of good health, according to KMA Land.

Here are five points:

 

1. In Iowa, 43 percent of the state's population lives in rural areas or small communities.

 

2. The state has 90 rural hospitals and 152 certified rural health clinics.

 

3. The USDA Rural Development has provided $350 million in grants and loans for rural hospitals, medical clinics, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Iowa since 2009.

 

4. In the last five years, 55 rural hospitals have closed in the United States.

 

5. To maintain Iowa's rural hospitals, the health systems continually work on recruiting personnel.
