Physicians experiencing barriers to telemedicine adoption — 5 things to note

Practice Management

In an American Academy of Family Physicians and Anthem's Robert Graham Center survey, 90 percent of physicians said they would adopt telemedicine services if they were reimbursed for their services, according to Healthcare DIVE.

AAFP and Robert Graham Foundation surveyed 1,557 randomly selected physicians about their attitudes and opinions concerning telehealth.

Here are five things to note:

1. Nearly all respondents said while telehealth is better than a patient not seeing a physician, in-office visits are the best type of care.

2. Physicians reported several telehealth adoption barriers including credential and license barriers, inadequate training and a lack of guidelines and measurable outcomes.

3. Of those physicians who used telehealth, respondents said they wanted a national standard to ensure telemedicine is meeting current quality and access standards.

4. The survey found physicians in rural areas (29 percent) are more likely to use telemedicine than those in urban areas (11 percent).

5. The U.S. telehealth market is expected to reach $2.8 billion by 2022, according to a Grand View Research report.
