Expansion plans, bundled payments & more: 6 big moves from Rothman Orthopaedics

Practice Management

Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute has made several big moves this year, including expansion plans, changes to its bundled payment strategy and bolstering its sports medicine partnerships.

Six big moves from the practice this year:

1. In June, Michael Smith, MD, and Eric Grossman, MD, were appointed to co-lead Rothman Orthopaedics' growth in the New York market.

2. Asif Ilyas, MD, founded the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Foundation for Opioid Research & Education in June to advance research and education to find solutions to the opioid epidemic.

3. The practice partnered with Leawood, Kan.-based ValueHealth to launch a multispecialty surgery center with a total joint replacement program in Philadelphia. The organizations are developing five similar facilities in Greater Philadelphia.

4. After being in bundled payments for the last 10 years, Rothman Orthopaedics has decided to drop out of the value-based initiative. "What happens is the growth changes every year; the better you get, the more difficult it is to save money, so we're now bottomed out," said Alexander Vaccaro, MD, PhD, the institute's president.

5. In March, the practice became the exclusive medical provider for the Philadelphia Fusion — the city's first professional esports team. Bradley Smith, MD, Edward Rosero, DO, and Robert Franks, DO, were installed as team physicians. The practice also penned a new deal with the Philadelphia 76ers for a further four years.

6. John Abraham, MD, founder of the orthopedic oncology service at Rothman Orthopaedics, began providing services at Hopewell Township, N.J.-based Capital Health Medical Center in March. The partnership led to Capital Health offering advanced surgical services, including limb-sparing techniques, total surgical removal for soft tissue sarcoma and joint revision.
