In 2016, more than half of the average physician compensation came from salary while 31.8 percent came from productivity, according to an AMA report.

1. The average physician compensation make-up includes:
• Salary: 52.5 percent
• Personal productivity: 31.8 percent
• Practice financial performance: 9 percent
• Bonuses: 4.1 percent
• Other sources: 2.5 percent
2. For physicians who own their practices, salary made up 30.1 percent of their compensation, compared to 69.9 percent for employed physicians.
3. Productivity accounted for 44.7 percent of compensation for private practice owners, compared to 22.3 percent for employed physicians.
4. The factors determining physician salary include:
• Specialty
• Time worked in the practice
• Previous year's productivity
• Ownership status
• Practice setting
5. Overall, around 15 percent of physicians had salary tied to patient satisfaction scores and multispecialty group physicians were more likely to have patient satisfaction a determinant in their salary than single specialty practices.
