Here are statistics on average orthopedic surgeon compensation from the MGMA's 2010 Physician Compensation and Production Survey based on 2009 data.

Spine surgeons compensated by hospital ownership received the highest average compensation, at $717,125. In general, hospital employment compensated higher than physician practices, however physician partners focused on hip and joint surgery received $61,977 more than those employed at hospitals. Additionally, in almost every case, physician partners and shareholders in a practice received higher compensation than non-shareholders. However, it was more profitable for spine surgeons to be non-shareholders in a practice, as they received $77,319 more on average than spine surgeon shareholders.

Physician partner/shareholders in a practice: $359, 335
Non-shareholders in a practice: $178,332

2. Spine surgeon
Compensation by hospital ownership: $717,125
Physician partner/shareholders in a practice: $605,772
Non-shareholders in a practice: $683,091

3. Sports medicine surgeon

Compensation by hospital ownership: $681,786
Physician partner/shareholders in a practice: $617,913
Non-shareholders in a practice: $522,578

4. Hip and joint surgeon
Compensation by hospital ownership: $515,789
Physician partner/shareholders in a practice: $577,766
Non-shareholders in a practice: $477,047
