The one HIPAA compliance mistake costing practices millions

Practice Management

Healthcare organizations violating HIPAA could face steep legal fees and many organizations make this one common mistake preventing them from being HIPAA-compliant, according to SearchHealthIT.

Michael Archuleta, director of IT and HIPAA security officer at Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad, Colo., detailed the common mistake providers make in HIPAA compliance.

Often, organizations do not make HIPAA compliance an everyday practice. Rather, many view HIPAA compliance as a one-time ordeal to knock off a check list. Mr. Archuleta strongly advises organizations to view HIPAA compliance as an "ongoing work in progress."

To make compliance a working project, organizations can implement compliance software including consultant-based solutions, partial solutions and total solutions. However, he warns consultant-based solutions leave organizations exposed over the long term and partial solutions do not address all that encompasses HIPAA regulation. Therefore, organizations would fare the best implementing a total solution software system.
