How Physicians Can Use Data to Improve Quality, Lower Costs

Practice Management

Physicians can use data extraction tools and technology to demonstrate quality improvements and receive incentive payments as the healthcare industry transitions to pay-for-performance, according to a Physicians Practice report.

Robert Greene, MD, national vice president of clinical analytics for UnitedHealthcare, spoke about using data to improve quality, access and affordability of care Tuesday at the Medical Group Management Association Annual Conference, according to the report. For reference, he suggested that providers use established benchmarks from agencies such as the National Quality Forum.

Providers should then use those benchmarks to identify areas where they want to improve and set goals for quality improvement. Then, enact a process to analyze the raw data.

Dr. Green said it's also important for physicians to have understandable and specific action items, such as interventions for patients not hitting benchmarks, according to the report.
