Here are 15 statistics on orthopedic surgeon compensation based on the demographic classification of their community, according to the Physician Compensation and Production Survey: 2011 Report Based on 2010 Data.


General orthopedic surgeons received the highest amount in non-metropolitan areas of fewer than 50,000 people, and their compensation decreased as the population increased. Spine surgeons in areas with 50,000-250,000 people received the highest compensation, at least $100,000 more than in larger demographic areas. There was no data for hip and joint surgeons in populations with fewer than 50,000 people, but their compensation steadily rose as the population increased. Sports medicine physicians reported the highest compensation in areas with 250,0001-1,000,000 people.
