Orthopedic and Spine Leader to Know: Dr. Jeff Pierson

Orthopedic & Spine Industry Leaders

A team of physicians at St. Francis Hospital-Mooresville in Mooresville, Ind., recently developed a strategy to cut down the number of patients who require blood transfusions as a result of surgery, and Jeff Pierson, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital, was featured in an Indy Star Q&A on the subject.

"The challenge is to reduce the patient's need for a blood transfusion, in spite of the fact that there's not much you can do to reduce the blood loss," said Dr. Pierson in the article. He said before the surgery, the physician administers iron and the medication Procrit to raise their patient's blood count.

These new developments are only the most recent accomplishments Dr. Pierson has achieved during his career. In addition to blood conservation with total joint replacement, his research interests include rehabilitation and recovery after total joint replacement. Dr. Pierson currently practices at the St. Vincent Orthopedic Center and with Northcentral Indiana Orthopedics in Logansport, Ind. In Nov.2007, Dr. Pierson was featured on the cover of Indianapolis Monthly and was named among the top physicians listed in the magazine.

"Pierson does more him and knee replacements than any other surgeon in the state — 750 or more a year, or more than 15 a week. His patient list reads like a who's who of Indianapolis, including NFL coaches, business-owners and his own business partner," wrote Laura Musall in a DePauw University news release. Dr. Pierson is a 1982 graduate of the university.

Dr. Pierson's professional interests include treatment of knee and hip arthritis with an emphasis on knee and hip replacement. He earned his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He also completed an adult hip and knee reconstruction fellowship at Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
