UnitedHealthcare issued positive medical policy for lumbar total disc replacement.

Here are five things to know:

1. UnitedHealthcare covers more than 16 million patients across the U.S., and those members will now have access to covered lumbar total disc replacement.

2. Since May, UnitedHealthcare is the second major payer to issue a positive coverage policy; Tricare changed its policy earlier this year affecting more than 9.5 million covered individuals.

3. There is more than 30 years of clinical evidence, including that generated by companies such as Centinel Spine and its originators, supporting lumbar total disc replacement effectiveness. Centinel Spine's prodisc L Anterior Lumbar Total Disc Replacement is included in the coverage.
