Wright Medical enrolls 1st patient in U.S. Infinity Total Ankle System study: 5 points

Spinal Tech

Wright Medical, a global orthopedic extremities market supplier, implanted the first patient into the U.S.-based Infinity Total Ankle System follow-up study.

Here are five points:

1. The 200-patient study is designed to evaluate 10-year implant survivorship in patients with ankle joints damaged by severe rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis or degenerative arthritis who received the Infinity Total Ankle System.

2. Patients will record outcomes measures related to quality of life, pain and functional scores, as well as X-ray assessments to characterize the improvements after implantation.

3. Last year, Wright Medical began its U.K. Infinity Total Ankle System study. Over the past year, the study has enrolled 100 total ankle replacement patients. The device company hopes to increase its enrollment numbers to 500 patients.

4. The Infinity Total Ankle System combines a low-profile implant design and integration with the company's Prophecy Pre-Operative Navigation Alignment Guides. Additionally, the system features a talar resurfacing option for talar bone preservation.

5. Wright Medical's total ankle system is intended to give a patient limited mobility by reducing pain, restoring alignment and replacing the flexion and extension movement in the ankle joint.
