BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina issued a policy covering interspinous and interlaminar stabilization/distraction to treat lumbar spinal stenosis.

Here are four things to know:

1. One of the devices physicians can use to perform interlaminar stabilization includes Paradigm Spine's coflex, an alternative to spinal fusion.

2. The device can be used in conjunction with decompression, and eliminates the need for a spinal fusion.

3. BCBS is the largest commercial payer in South Carolina.

4. Lumbar spinal stenosis affects 1.6 million patients annually in the U.S.
