Callaghan Named New President of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Other Board Members Announced

John J. Callaghan, MD, was elected president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons at the organization's 2010 meeting in New Orleans. A specialist in adult reconstruction with an emphasis on hip and knee replacement, Dr. Callaghan is the Lawrence and Marilyn Dorr Chair and a professor in the department of orthopaedics and and the department of bioengineering at the University of Iowa's College of Medicine. He also serves on the orthopedic staff at the Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center.


"It is a privilege to lead the academy in its mission to support and educate our members and ensure they provide the best possible quality musculoskeletal care for their patients," Dr. Callaghan said in a written statement.

Dr. Callaghan outlined several priorities for the academy in the coming year. Among them are tracking success rates for procedures and devices to enhance quality, initiating efforts to collaborate with orthopedic specialty societies and international organizations, and continuing to improve all aspects of patient care.

Dr. Callaghan previously served as first vice president of the AAOS and a former vice president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is also a past president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Iowa Orthopaedic Society, the Hip Society and the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, according to a press release from the AAOS.

The AAOS also announced the election of Daniel J. Berry, MD, as first vice president of the AAOS, as well as the election of several new board members. Dr. Berry serves as a professor of orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic's College of Medicine and is chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He most recently also served as second vice president of the AAOS and before that, as president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
