Orthocell scaffold sees positive results in orthopedic nerve regeneration trial

Orthocell noted positive interim clinical results for CelGro, its collagen-based scaffold to support tissue growth and repair, reports Small Caps.

Four things to know:

1. CelGro is a bio-compatible and bio-absorbable scaffold for use on its own or in combination with autologous cells or growth factors. It has a range of applications for orthopedics, general, gynecology and ENT surgeries.

2. The clinical trial is studying 20 patients who suffered an injury that led to loss of function or paralysis following a severed connection between the peripheral nerves in the arm, brachial plexus or spinal cord.

3. Orthocell reported 73 percent of nerve repairs resulted in positive functional recovery of affected muscles within 12 months. One quadriplegic patient with complete paralysis regained significant arm and hand function.

4. A follow-up of the first 12 participants one year after surgery showed that voluntary muscle movement was restored in 96 percent of nerve repairs with 66 percent resulting in functional recovery of muscles.
