Orthocell's CelGro collagen rope may be superior option for ACL reconstruction: 4 key insights

Biologics

Regenerative medicine company Orthocell successfully conducted a pre-clinical evaluation using CelGro collagen rope for ACL reconstruction.

Here are four things to know:

1. The study was intended to demonstrate that CelGro was equal or superior to the use of an autologous tendon graft for ACL reconstruction, which can result in donor site discomfort and other complications.

2. CelGro rope is made from braided collagen fibers. Collagen rope may eliminate the need for autograft harvest. Stem cells from the ACL stump are capable of ingrowth into the collagen rope for tissue regeneration and can integrate with native bone with a tensile strength similar to that of the natural ligament.

3. There were 72 cases involved in the study, with 36 cases receiving an autograft and the other 36 cases receiving CelGro collagen rope for ACL reconstruction. Cases were evaluated at multiple points in time and underwent either a regeneration assessment or mechanical test to assess the performance of the CelGro collagen rope compared to autologous tendon graft for ACL reconstruction.

4. The results indicate that collagen rope may eliminate the need for autograft harvest; more pre-clinical studies are required before human trials can begin.
