NuVasive's patented porous-surface PEEK technology is designed to enhance osseointegration and interbody implant fusion rates to treat degenerative cervical disc disease, according to a study published in the Journal of Spine and Neurosurgery.
Here are four things to know:
1. In the study, 50 patients with degenerative cervical disc disease underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion using NuVasive's Cohere cervical interbody fusion device. There were 11 one-level, 23 two-level and 16 three-level fusions between C3 and C7.
2. Thirteen study participants previously had an unsuccessful ACDF procedure. All patients who had revision surgery with Cohere achieved fusion six months postoperatively.
3. The patients' average disc height increased by more than 4 mm at 12 months postoperatively, and all 50 patients demonstrated decreased neck pain and showed radiographic fusion.
4. NuVasive incorporated the Cohere technology, which is designed with a 3D porous PEEK architecture to encourage bone ingrowth without comprising implant strength, into its portfolio when it acquired Vertera Spine in September 2017.
