MLB Investigates Dr. Joseph Purita's Biologic Treatment for Yankees' Bartolo Colon

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Joseph R. Purita, MD, a physician who runs the Institute of Regenerative and Molecular Orthopedics in Boca Raton, Fla., is being investigated for the biologic treatment he administered to Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon, according to a New York Daily News report.

Major League Baseball officials are questioning whether human growth hormones, which are banned by the league, were used in Mr. Colon's treatment. While Dr. Purita has used HGH on other patients, he maintained that Mr. Colon received a different type of injection.

The procedure entailed removing bone marrow from Mr. Colon's body, separating it from blood material and combining it with his body fat to inject back into the pitcher's elbow and shoulder. The injection was used to help repair ligament damage and a torn rotator cuff, according to the report.

Dr. Purita performed the procedure in Mr. Colon's home of the Dominican Republic last April.
