With two big injuries, Dr. Jonathan Drezner has a busy Super Bowl

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

While the Seattle didn't win Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday, the Seahawks' aggressive, smashmouth style of play kept team physician Jonathan Drezener, MD, very busy, reports Ivy League.com.

Along with dealing with a very banged-up defensive corps, Dr. Drezener had to tend to a fairly violent arm injury for cornerback Jeremey Lane, after Mr. Lane intercepted New England quarterback Tom Brady's pass in the end zone in the first quarter and came down awkwardly on his arm.

While a diagnosis for Mr. Lane's injury has yet to surface after the game, he was carted off the field and didn't return to play.

During the third quarter, Seattle defensive end Cliff Avril took a tremendous blow to the head. After he laid motionless on the field for a few moments, he was able to carry himself back to the sideline under his own power. Mr. Avril underwent a comprehensive examination to see if he had suffered a concussion — which he had.

Before the game, Dr. Drezener oversaw key injuries to other defensive stars, including all-pro cornerback Richard Sharman (tendon tear), strong safety Kam Chancellor (bone bruise) and free safety Earl Thomas (dislocated shoulder).

Along with his responsibilities to the Seahawks, Dr. Drezener is a family medicine doctor who specializes in sports medicine in the Seattle area. Dr. Drezener is also responsible for the orthopedic and sports medicine curriculum at the University of Washington's Family Medicine Residency program.
