Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The following are findings from a nerdwallet health analysis of orthopedic surgeon hip replacement data from CMS' 2012 Provider Utilization and Payment Data: Physician and Other Supplier Public Use File, released April 9.

  • Just 10 percent of orthopedic surgeons perform more than 50 hip replacements each year at institutions providing more than 200 joint replacements annually, the volume benchmarks suggested by Medicare for patient selection of a hip replacement surgeon.
  • 47 percent of surgeons performed fewer than 20 hip replacements in 2012.
  • Only 408 surgeons, or 12 percent of the total surveyed, performed more than 50 Medicare-insured hip replacements in 2012.
  • Submitted physician charges ranged from about $251 to nearly $41,000.
