A new study in the American Journal of Infection Control has identified five interventional areas that decrease the risk of surgical site infections after orthopedic surgery.
The study examined bacterial isolates from more than 2,000 patients on a ward in a major Chinese teaching hospital who underwent orthopedic surgery.
According to researchers, SSI rates were reduced with:
1. Individualized modifications to antibiotic prophylaxis regimens.
2. Improved patient blood glucose control.
3. Smoking cessation on the part of the patient.
4. Proper antibiotic prophylaxis.
5. Shortened surgery time.
