In a recent study published in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, researchers propose and analyze a comprehensive classification system for stress fractures that includes fracture grade, fracture location and imaging modality.
The classification system includes:
• Grades I to V for fracture grade.
• Grade I indicates an asymptomatic stress reaction on imaging.
• Grade II indicates pain with no fracture line.
• Grade III indicates a non-displaced fracture.
• Grade IV indicates a displaced fracture.
• Grade V indicates nonunion.
• 93.3 percent of the system's evaluators said the system would be useful and easy to remember.
The authors of the study included Christopher Kaeding, MD, and Timothy Miller, MD, of the Ohio State University Sports Medicine Center in Columbus.
