Unwinding in the winter season: Drs. Rojeh Melikian & Brian R. Gantwerker on how they relax

Spine

Two spine surgeons discuss their favorite wintertime activities.

Ask Spine Surgeons is a weekly series of questions posed to spine surgeons around the country about clinical, business and policy issues affecting spine care. We invite all spine surgeon and specialist responses.

Next week's question: How will the upcoming election affect spine care in the country?

Question: What activities help you relax during the winter season?

Rojeh Melikian, MD, DISC Sports & Spine Center, Marina del Rey, Calif.: I really enjoy skiing during the winter season. There's nothing like the scenery and fresh air on a freshly-groomed ski slope to recharge the soul.

Brian R. Gantwerker, MD, The Craniospinal Center of Los Angeles: Going for afternoon hikes in the cooler weather up on the ridge is centering and just needed sometimes. Sitting outside in the cool air with some of my wife's killer hot chocolate or a nice glass of scotch helps me unwind. A simple night in, with the fireplace on and my pug falling asleep next to my leg in my easy chair is the simplest, no-nonsense way for me to relax. My brother is an avid skier and we might head up to Big Bear this season and I will try not to tear my ACL.
