The global spine implant and devices market is expected to grow at a 5.6 percent CAGR through 2020, according to a Buy Markets report. Technological advancements, an ageing population and increasing spinal deformity cases are all driving this growth. Spinal fusion and fixation technology dominate the market this year, but motion preservation and non-fusion technology are expected to see the highest growth.

 

Safe Orthopaedics to market new implant for spinal trauma care in US
afe Orthopaedics, based in Eragny, France, received FDA clearance to market its new implant for traumatic spinal injuries in the United States. The One-Step System implant aids with fracture correction and spine stabilization at the same time. Designed for thoraco-lumbar trauma injuries treated through open or MIS surgery, the implant is a screw mechanism that provides vertebral fracture reduction.

 

FDA clears 1st nucleic acid-based test for central nervous system infections for marketing
The FDA has approved marketing for the first "cerebrospinal fluid nucleic acid-based test for simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens that can cause central nervous system infections," according to HHS. Called the FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis Panel, the fluid is intended to test for 14 bacterial, viral and yeast pathogens with a CSF sample.

 

Atlas Spine develops technology for posterior approach
Atlas Spine has added the True Position XL TLIF system, which is designed for the TruLIF technique, providing surgeons direct compression and one incision during the minimally invasive procedure. John Shiau, MD, of Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital, performed the first surgery with the device in September.

 

CNS past president Dr. Nathan Selden joins Cerebrotech's scientific advisory board
Cerebrotech Medical Systems added Nathan Selden, MD, PhD, to its scientific advisory board. Dr. Selden is the incoming chairman of the department of neurological surgery and the Campagna Chair of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine in Portland. He is the fifth member of the Cerebrotech Scientific Advisory Board.

 

North American Spine Foundation gives 1st research grants to Children's Spine Foundation
The North American Spine Foundation plans to award two research grants to the Children's Spine Foundation. The organization will receive one grant for research into pediatric spinal deformity incidence and another to investigate the financial burden and parental impact on families dealing with early onset scoliosis. The grants total more than $31,000.

 

Si-Bone, Colorado HealthOP partner
SI-BONE partnered with Colorado HealthOP, the state's nonprofit health insurance cooperative for individuals and small businesses across the state. The co-op will now cover SI-BONE's iFuse Implant System for minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion for their members in accordance with the health plan policy and medical necessity.
