New Study Examines Risk Factors for Complications After Spine Surgery

Spine

A study recently published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery has identified several risk factors for postoperative complications and death after spine surgery, according to a release from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. After evaluating the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database between 2005 and 2008, authors found a 7.6 percent complication rate and 0.03 percent death rate within 30 days of surgery. The risk of complication and death increased with patient age and surgical wound problems independently increased the risk of death, according to the report.

Other risk factors during the first 30 days after surgery included congestive heart failure and history of heart attacks, preoperative neurological problems, a history of spinal wound infection, corticosteroid use, a history of sepsis and prolonged surgery times.
