Here are eight things for spinal surgeons to know for Sept. 25, 2014.

Orthopedic spine vs. neurosurgeon for ACDF
In the study, around 20 percent of the single-level ACDF procedures were performed by orthopedic spine surgeons and 80 percent were performed by neurosurgeons. The study found that the patients who underwent ACDF from neurosurgeons had higher comorbidities. However, propensity matching showed not all preoperative variables vary significantly between the two cohorts.

 

7 trends in treating patients with thoracic spine disc disorder, myelopathy
A study published in Spine, which examined trends in three different surgical treatments for thoracic disc disorders for patients with myelopathy, found that treatment shifted substantially from disc decompression/excision without fusion to posterior/posterolateral decompression and spinal fusion. In 2000, around two-thirds of patients underwent DDE treatment; by 2010, nearly half of the patients underwent PSF.

At the request of House Republicans, the GAO examined the financial and staff resources CMS' Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight expected to use through fiscal year 2014 to enact the private health insurance and health insurance exchange provisions of the PPACA. The GAO couldn't determine the reliability of other pieces of financial information because the CMS core financial system didn't provide totals.
