Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Mark Prasarn of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston

Mark Prasarn, MD, is the chief of spine trauma and an associate professor in the department of orthopedics at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. Dr. Mark PrasarnDr. Prasarn specializes in spine with an emphasis in surgical care of complex spinal disorders and orthopedic trauma. His areas of clinical interest include complex fractures, degenerative spinal disorders, revision spinal surgery, degenerative spinal disorders, spinal trauma and tumors. He also performs motion preservation surgery and minimally invasive surgery.

He has authored many peer-reviewed journal articles on spine trauma, degenerative spine, pelvic factures, non-unions and complex fractures. He is a scientific journal reviewer for Spine and the Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection and Critical Care. He is also a spinal consultant for the Houston Texans and all University of Houston sports teams.

Dr. Prasarn is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, North American Spine Society and American Spinal Cord Injury Association.

He earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. He then finished a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Prasarn also completed the Louis A. Goldstein Spinal Surgery fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center and has been a visiting fellow at the MD Anderson Cancer Institute.
