Lawrence G. Lenke, MD, is a professor of neurological surgery and chief of spine surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, a position he recently filled in February. He succeeded Keith H. Bridwell, MD, who held the position for 28 years. "Larry Lenke was my first fellow," said Dr. Bridwell in a Washington University news release. "Since that time, he has been my partner, and I have watched him grow into a fantastic surgeon and leader. He will do wonderful things as chief and will continue to build the spine service's reputation, and I will do what I can to assist him."
He is also the director of the Complex Spinal Deformity Institute and fellowship at Washington University. During his career, he has served as chairman at more than 80 spinal surgery courses worldwide and served as president of Scoliosis Research Society.
While president of SRS, Dr. Lenke chaired a task force that led to the development of Spine Deformity, scheduled to debut in January 2013 as the society's official journal. He will serve as one of the inaugural deputy editors of the journal. Additionally, he is an editor for Spine, The Journal of Spinal Disorders and Techniques, The Spine Journal and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.
Dr. Lenke's clinical interests include treating spinal deformity, with an expertise in the most complex cases. He treats adult and adolescent patients. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Lenke is involved in the North American Spine Society, Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. In 2011, he was co-chair at the first annual Chinese Orthopedic Association and Scoliosis Research Society Conference in Beijing, which had more than 400 attendees.
Dr. Lenke earned his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and completed his residency at Washington University School of Medicine and Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis. His additional training includes a fellowship in adult and pediatric spinal surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.
