Steven Garfin, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon with a special interest in adult spine. He is currently the chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at UC San Diego and was recently elected president of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery. He is a member of several professional societies, including the North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
His work with patients covers several pathologies, including sacroiliac joint dysfunction. He has chaired the medical advisory board of SI-BONE, the company that produces the minimally invasive iFuse technology for patients with SI joint dysfunction.
"Published studies have shown that over 20 percent of low back pain complaints can be related to the SI joint," said Dr. Garfin in an interview with Spine-health. "David Polly, MD, and colleagues at the University of Minnesota estimated that up to 25 percent of LBP patients may have sufficient contribution from the hip or SI joints. That underscores the need for all clinicians to be aware of non-spinal pain generators and to pursue alternative differential diagnoses."
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Garfin has focused on research. He has authored nine books, 123 book chapters and 255 peer-review journal articles. His research has earned the Orthopaeidc Research Society New Investigator Award. He has also received the Wiltse Award for Leadership in the Field of Spine from the North American Spine Society.
Dr. Garfin earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at UC San Diego. His additional training includes a fellowship in spinal disorders at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
