Algorithm offers accuracy, confidence during spine surgeries: 5 insights

Spinal Tech

Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University and Germany-based Siemens Healthcare researchers created an algorithm to automatically label images of vertebrae during spine surgeries. The algorithm, "LevelCheck," pinpoints individual vertebrae in real time during spine surgery.

Researchers applied LevelCheck to 400 images of spine surgery patients. Three spine surgeons analyzed the algorithm's accuracy and helpfulness.

Spine published the study.

Here are five insights:

1. The algorithm leverages CT scans taken before surgery and radiographs taken at the start of surgery. Right before the surgery, LevelCheck compares the radiograph and the CT, matching positions and landmarks, and reflecting labels onto the radiograph. The algorithm completes this process in about 20 seconds to 40 seconds.

2. The study found LevelCheck accurately labeled vertebrae in every case.

3. The spine surgeons noted the algorithm would be helpful in 42 percent of the cases, boosting surgeon confidence in 31 percent of the cases.

4. Researchers noted the algorithm fits into the workflow and demands little extra time during surgical operations.

5. National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering funded the research.
