6 spine, orthopedic robotic updates in Q2 | 2024


From milestones to market approvals, here are six key spine and orthopedic headlines to know from the second quarter of 2024.

1. Michael Gallizzi, MD, of The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., completed his 300th robotic spine surgery April 2.

2. Surgeons at Cambridge (Minn.) Medical Center completed the 500th knee and hip replacement procedure using Stryker's Mako robot at the facility.

3. John Sperling, MD, of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic completed the first surgery with Zimmer Biomet's Rosa Shoulder robot.

4. While total knee replacements performed with the help of surgical robots have better patient outcomes, they cost an average of $2,400 more than conventional knee replacements, according to new research published in the Archives of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. 

5. DePuy Synthes earned FDA 510(k) clearance for the Velys robot with unicompartmental knee replacements. 

6. Globus Medical has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its ExcelsiusFlex orthopedics robot.
