Orthopedic surgeon indicted in $700K insurance fraud scheme — 5 insights

Lodi, Calif.-based physician Gary Royce Wisner, MD, was scheduled for arraignment June 13 for 11 felony counts of insurance fraud, Insurance Journal reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Dr. Wisner allegedly provided unnecessary treatments for orthopedic patients in order to commit insurance fraud.

2. The alleged fraud resulted in State Compensation Insurance Fund, Zenith Insurance, Hartford and Tristar losing over $700,000.

3. Dr. Wisner's actions were investigated by the California Department of Insurance, San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office, California Department of Justice Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse and HHS.

4. A criminal grand jury indicted Dr. Wisner on 11 felony counts of insurance fraud May 30.

5. The case is being prosecuted by the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office.
