AAMC honors UConn Health surgeon-scientist

The Association of American Colleges has awarded orthopedic surgeon Cato Laurencin, MD, PhD, with the 2020 Herbert W. Nickens Award.

Four things to know:

1. The award honors individuals for their contributions to promoting justice in medical education and healthcare equity.

2. Dr. Laurencin co-founded the W. Montague Cobb/National Medical Association Health Institute in Washington, D.C., which focuses on addressing health disparities. He is also founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities.

3. He is a shoulder and sports medicine surgeon and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Association.

4. In 2016, President Barack Obama presented Dr. Laurencin with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the highest honor for technological achievement in the U.S.
