Dr. Clifford Jones treats man trapped in gold mine: 5 takeaways

Clifford Jones, MD, treated a man who was trapped in a gold mine for three days at Banner University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., according to Daily News.

Here are five takeaways:

1. John Waddell was lowering himself into a 100-foot shaft when he lost his grip and plummeted 50 feet into the Sonoran Desert's gold mine.

2. After breaking his left leg and ankle from the fall, Mr. Waddell was left stranded for three days. During the time, he was forced to fight off and kill three diamondback rattlesnakes .

3. Dr. Jones said Mr. Waddell was at risk of internal bleeding, blood clots, dehydration or shock.

4. A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Jones specializes in foot and ankle surgery, hip and knee surgery and orthopedic trauma surgery.

5. After earning his medical degree form Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Dr. Jones completed his residency at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. He underwent fellowship training at Seattle-based University of Washington.
