Scripps Health opens new musculoskeletal center: 5 things to know

Orthopedic

San Diego-based Scripps Health opened the Donald P. and Darlene V. Shiley Musculoskeletal Center at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pine in La Jolla, Calif.

Here are five things to know about the new center:

1. The Donald P. and Darlene V. Shiley Musculoskeletal Center will serve as a one-stop shop for advanced diagnostics, treatment, surgery and rehabilitation services as well as routine and follow-up appointments.

2. The center will provide the full-spectrum of musculoskeletal care, including  sports medicine, podiatry, spine surgery, hand and wrist surgery, total joint replacement, and complex foot and ankle reconstruction.

3. The center also houses the Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education, which will investigate the safety and efficacy of new technologies and therapies to treat orthopedic disease and disorders.

4. The center was made possible in large part by a $5 million gift from Darlene Shiley to support advanced orthopedic care and research at Scripps Clinic.

5. A number of hospitals have recognized the growing need for specialized orthopedic care and have expanded the services they offer. Even the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, the nation's oldest orthopedic hospital, announced plans in August to open a new office in Stamford, Conn.
