Thousands file compensation claims for DePuy's wrong size implants — 5 key points

Practice Management

Tens of thousands of patients have filed compensation claims for enduring crippling pain from DePuy's wrong size implants, according to Tech Times.

Here are five key points:

1. Health experts said the DePuy's hip replacement implants leave toxic ions in patients' bloodstreams as the implants wear.

2. In one case, DePuy found an "error in measuring technique" in one of their plants in Leeds, England. Allegedly, some part of the company's "Pinnacle" implant design was measured while it was still hot, resulting in a different size than when the piece is measured at room temperature.

3. DePuy claimed no part of their Pinnacle design was over 0.032 millimeters off, with a 2008 investigation finding the slightly-off measuremen will not impact the liner's function or lead to any safety issues for patients.

4. However, many surgeons counter a marginal difference in measurement may be harmful for patents.

5. The National Health Service recommended that any patient who had a metal-on-metal hip implant to look out for these symptoms:

• Hip, leg or groin pain
• Limping; problems walking
• Inflammation in or near the hip joint
• Grinding from the joint
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Numbness
