Why are medical students avoiding solo or partnership practices? 4 reasons

Sixty-nine percent of medical students plan to join group practices or hospitals, while only 17 percent plan to go into solo or partnership practices, according to the 8th Annual Future Physicians of America Survey released by Epocrates.

The survey polled 1,026 medical students in the United States. The survey was conducted online during July 2013.

 

When asked why they may avoid solo or partnership practices, respondents reported:

 

•    Concern with balancing work and personal life — 51 percent
•    Dissatisfaction with training in billing and coding — 41 percent
•    Dissatisfaction with training in practice management — 37 percent
•    Unwillingness to deal with lawsuits or malpractice insurance premiums — 17 percent
