The Joint Commission recognizes Invuity technology — 5 key notes

Spinal Tech

The Joint Commission recognized Invuity's proprietary photonics technology as an important innovation in preventing unintended retained foreign objects left inside patients during surgery.

Here are five key notes:

1. The Intelligent Photonics is incorporated into Invuity's surgical devices, which provide direct visualization of the surgical cavity. The visualization supports precision, efficiency and safety.

2. Surgeons have an easier time visualizing the surgical cavity with Invuity's technology, lowering the risk of leaving objects behind.

3. In 2013, The Joint Commission issued a Sentinel Alert to warn healthcare providers about leaving objects in patients after surgery. When this happens, hospitals are required to immediately investigate and respond.

4. Medical liability costs from URFOs exceed $166,000 per incident, which the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services may not reimburse.

5. In the most recent issue of The Joint commission's TheSource, the organization advised considering "proprietary photonics technology" that provides thermally cool intracavity illumination to improve visualization and allows for a thorough visual inspection during surgery and before closing.
