Orthopedic Surgeons From Texas' Foundation Surgical Hospital Lend Support to Haiti Relief Efforts

News and Analysis

Orthopedic surgeons Brian Parsley, MD, and Rex Marco, along with physician assistant Jerry Buchert, of Foundation Surgical Hospital in Bellaire, Texas, offered their services to help with the relief effort in Haiti, according to a Foundation Surgical news release.

Dr. Parsley, who is a board member for Operation Walk Haiti, a 501 c(3) organization dedicated to Haiti's relief effort, visited the country on a medical mission trip. He is in the process of developing a comprehensive plan for continued service and assistance for the Haitian people through a cooperative effort with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the Haitian Medical Association to try to establish Centers for Musculoskeletal Care to provide for ongoing needs in the country, according to the release.

Dr. Marco and Mr. Buchert joined forces with a team of 27 healthcare professionals to offer their medical services in Milot, Haiti, working at the Sacred Heart Hospital, which is supported by volunteers through the Crudem Foundation. "We went to Haiti to help people that suffered devastating injuries in the earthquake. In return, they showed us tremendous love and appreciation. It was clearly the most gratifying experience in my professional career. I hope to return in the future," Dr. Marco said in the release.

Dr. Marco and Mr. Buchert are also board members of the Spine and Extremity Tumor Research Endowment, a public, not-for-profit organization that has helped raise money to send their medical team to Haiti.
