Hospitals look to Alexa to help with surgical safety checklist: 5 key notes

Practice Management

Hospitals and medical centers are utilizing Amazon Alexa to deliver routine medical information to patients at home and to help physicians complete lists of tasks, according to CNBC.

Here are five key notes:

1. Physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston are researching how Alexa benefits surgical safety checklists protocol in operating rooms.

2. During a routine safety checklist, a patient was able to identify a discrepancy in his medical record via voice application. His medical records did not list his allergy to latex, which he was then able to identify before going under.

3. Boston Children's hospital recently released an Alexa app, KidsMD, allowing users to get health information for common illnesses and medication dosing.

4. Boston Children's hospital is also piloting an Alexa app to help physicians comply with protocols before procedures and surgeries.

5. Alexa could have transcription applications in the future, but since it's not HIPAA compliant hospitals are unable to use it for documentation.
