Researchers examined data from 554 patients who had low back symptoms at 18, 19 and 21 years of age. Fat content of multifidus muscles was significantly higher among women than men, although it was not associated with symptom severity.
The cross-sectional areas of the erractor spinae and multifidus muscles were larger among men but were not associated with increased pain.
