Sports medicine surgeon Dr. Richard Cronin dies: 4 things to know

Richard M. Cronin, MD, a longtime sports medicine specialist, passed away at the age of 89 years, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Here are four things to know:

 

1. Dr. Cronin previously served as a clinical professor of medicine and vice chairman and orthopedics program director at Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola University School of Medicine.

 

2.  He has also provided care at Elmhurst (Ill.) Memorial Hospital and Loretto Hospital in Chicago.

 

3. He once performed surgery on former Notre Dame and NFL quarterback John Huarte. Mr. Huarte has credited Dr. Cronin with saving his career.

 

4. Dr. Cronin completed a medical residency at the University of Illinois’ Research and Education Hospital in Chicago.
