Pagers, Other Outdated Tech Tools Could Cost Healthcare Industry $5.1B

Clinicians waste an average of more than 45 minutes each day due to the use of outdated communications technologies, and this could translate to a loss of more than $5.1 billion annually across the U.S. healthcare industry, according to a research report by Ponemon Institute.

For the report, the institute surveyed 577 healthcare professionals. The findings of the report include insights into the economic impact of outdated communications technology, the effects of regulations on patient care and technology adoption and the pervasiveness of data breaches.

Key findings of the report were:

•    Fifty-two percent of respondents said that the primary reason for clinicians wasting time is the use of pagers.
•    Sixty-five percent of respondents believe secure text messaging can cut discharge time by about 50 minutes.
•    Fifty-one percent of respondents said that compliance requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act can be a barrier to providing effective patient care.
•    Sixty-three percent of respondents said their organization experienced a data breach that required notification in the past two years.
•    Forty-five percent of respondents said that their organizations have not experienced a change in effectiveness in protecting patient information.
