Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Robert W. Frederick of Rothman Institute in Philadelphia

Robert W. Frederick, MD, a sports medicine surgeon at Rothman Institute in Philadelphia, is a leader in his field. Dr. Frederick is currently the orthopedic consultant for the U.S. Women’s Olympic Gymnastic Team, the assistant team physician for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Flyers and the associate director of sports medicine for Rothman.

During his career, Dr. Frederick has also served as an assistant team physician for the Boston Bruins and New England Patriots. He was also the director of athlete care for gymnastics at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and a USA team physician for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Frederick serves as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He has also engaged in research on various sports medicine topics, including ACL repair and perioperative compartmental syndrome. He has published articles in Arthroscopy and Arthroscopic Surgery and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Dr. Frederick has also given presentations and lectures across the country on sports medicine, including the AAOS meetings and at the Orthopaedic Research Society.

He earned his medical degree at the Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University. His additional training includes a fellowship in arthroscopy and sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical Center in Boston.
