Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Chitranjan S. Ranawat of Ranawat Orthopaedic Center in New York City

Chitranjan S. Ranawat, MD, is the director of Ranawat Orthopaedic Center at Lenox Hill Hospital and at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He also serves as a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Medical College in New York City. He has a professional interest in total hip and knee replacement and primary and revision total joint surgery.

Dr. Ranawat has proven himself a leader over and over again during his career, serving as the founding president of the American Knee Society for two years as well as president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, New York Hand Society and the Easter Orthopaedic Association. He is currently the president of The Hip Society.

Beyond those organizations for which he has served as president, Dr. Ranawat is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic surgeons, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, American Orthopaedic Association and the American Rheumatologic Association. He has earned several awards throughout his career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in the NYC Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and the Life Time Excellence Award from Daly College in India.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Ranawat holds several patents for total hip, knee, wrist and elbow systems. He has also published several articles on orthopedic and spine surgery topics. A native of India, Dr. Ranawat organized the eighth winter meeting of “Advances and Techniques in Joint Replacement Surgery” in Kolkata, India.

“Teaching, education and research have always been important to me,” said Dr. Ranawat in a Hospital for Special Surgery report. “I have given my time and financial resources since the late 1980s to teach Indian orthopedic surgeons through a fellowship program and continuing education courses.” Of the 45 orthopedic surgeons he taught through the Ranawat Orthopaedic Research Foundation, 90 percent returned to India to practice orthopedic surgery.

Dr. Ranawat earned his medical degree and residency training in India. His additional training includes a residency at St. Peters Hospital and Albany Medical Center, both in Albany, N.Y. He also completed a fellowship in hand surgery and rheumatology-orthopedic reconstructive surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
